Tips and ideas from other Kiwanis clubs

The Kiwanis Club of Mauston, Wisconsin participated in Kiwanis International’s Read Around the World service project and honored participants as Terrific Kids!

Read Around the World LogoThe Mauston Kiwanis held its first Read Around the World project as a reward for students of the Terrific Kids of Westside Elementary program January 20 with Kiwanis member and project manager Jean Bonney. The Reading Sleepover was the second of four special events in which every student receives a Terrific Kids certificate from the club for working hard on leadership characteristics with their teachers. The project was held in the Westside Elementary School gym.

The sleepover schedule started with arrival at 5 p.m. with sleeping bags, flashlights, pajamas, sack lunch and books in hand. Children, 134 in all, were divided into 14 different groups lead by 33 adults including 7 Kiwanis members with assistance from 9 Mauston High School Key Club members.

Every 30 minutes the group switched from reading to an activity, then back to reading. Students were able to read on their own or with their groups, books that were brought from home or provided by teacher Marianne Cherny, the school project leader.

Paul Ziebell was on hand for a juggling experience in which students helped him juggle basketballs. DJ’s played the Bunny Hop and the Chicken Dance while the Pre-K through 2nd graders danced, releasing energy. Lynda Vinopal led the storytelling time with her special apron and hat. Key Club members baked cookies for the snack before bed.

Boy in sleeping bag The night ended with 30 minutes of reading by flashlight before the gym lights were turned off and the “I have to go to the bathroom,” coughing spells, and giggling began. All were tucked snuggly in their sleeping bags and fast asleep by midnight. Students were picked-up Saturday morning at 7 a.m. and given their certificates by Kiwanis members along with breakfast.
